Age range: Session-dependent. Please refer to session description below
Session #1 (July 12 - 16) - Model Boat Building "J.R. Junior - Boat Box"
We piloted this project last summer and have spent the school year working with hundreds of kids and dozens of teachers to perfect it! Participants will build and take home a 10" model of our famous Periwinkle Junior rowboat design. We have the option of teaching this session remotely or in-person. If we are in-person we will have the option of building our models out of plywood and utilizing shop tools like coping saws and hand planes. If we are working remotely, we will be building out of balsa wood and participants will be provided with all of the tools needed. Our more advanced builders and those who have built this model previously will have the opportunity to add a solar powered motor, a sailing rig, and more advanced finishing techniques. You do not need any previous experience for this project and you do not need to sign-up for any other sessions to take part in this project. Ages 7+; $475.
Session #2 (July 19 - 23) - Design Your Own Boat
Participants will build upon their previous boat building skills and take it to the next level in this session, going from an idea in your head to creating designs and models of the boat you want to build. The design challenge is to create a boat that can be built out of one sheet of plywood (4'x8'). The design process will involve making models out of various materials, creating accurate drawings and measurements for your big boat, and testing your models under load. Participants will take home the models they build, as well as the plans they develop. We have the option of teaching this session remotely or in-person. This session is a prerequisite for those who want to enroll in Session 3 "Build Your Own Boat". Ages 10+; $550.
Session #3 (July 26 - 30) - Build Your Own Boat
During this session we will go from 2D to 3D and from small to big, as we take the lines drawings and measurements we developed during Session 2 and turn them into the boat of your dreams! Participants will be guided by expert boat builders and provided all of the necessary tools and materials, as they work in our shop on building a full size version of the boat they designed. At the end of this session we will launch our boats and conduct a "sea trial" on a protected and shallow body of water, under the supervision of our staff. Session #2 is a prerequisite for this session and the number of participants will be limited, so we can ensure everyone gets the time and attention they need to build the boat they designed. We are not able to offer this session remotely, so in the event we need to cancel in-person programming families will either receive a credit or a reimbursement. Ages 10+; $550.
Session #4 (August 2 - 6) - Musical Instruments
Participants will pre-select if they want to build a three string guitar, a four string guitar, or a box drum. Each of these instruments will be made out of wood and will require the use of hand tools and some power tools at our shop. In addition to the woodworking skills, participants will learn the basics of how to play their instrument and will be able to take their project home with them at the end. We are not able to offer this session remotely, so in the event we need to cancel in-person programming, families will either receive a credit or a reimbursement. You do not need any previous experience for this project and you do not need to sign-up for any other sessions to take part in this project. Ages 7+; $500.
