Summer Sessions Set Sail: Boat Building, Backyard Games, and Big Time Learning!

The summer is officially in full swing, and students are back in the shop for this season's four week session! Students got started on Monday, July 8. The summer session will take place over a four week period. Some of the students will return for the following weeks within this session, while others may only spend a week or two in the shop. Each week, students are being taught hands on how to work with tools and materials to build various backyard games that they can take home at the end of the day, and even kayaks. Each day of the week, groups of students take turns getting out on the water in boats at Fort Point Channel. In the shop, students have begun building their own wooden backyard games and crafts to take home when finished, such as cornhole boards, ladder golf, and miniature boat models.

The student’s attending the full four week session will be able to design and build their own kayaks in teams alongside their peers. With the guidance and oversight of our teachers, students are able to express creative independence when designing and building their games and boats. Safety and quality craftsmanship are a few of our key values that guide all boat building and activities here at Community Boat Building. We encourage our students to feel a “freedom to fail,” and to accept that if the work feels hard, that means you are learning.

After the summer session is over, some of the Periwinkle Juniors that have been used during the summer program will be available to purchase in the shop, selling for $450 each. In the meantime, we currently have a few new Periwinkle Juniors available for purchase in the shop, built during our school year session that recently wrapped up in early June.

We are pleased to be starting production on a new concept for Community Boat Building this fall. We will be launching a series of online, instructional lessons for boat building. We are excited about this new offering because it gives us an opportunity to expand accessibility and provide access to a wider audience of future boat builders.

This will be a comprehensive learning package that includes physical boat building, take home kits, accompanied by online video lessons, and a wiki guide. We are thrilled to bring this opportunity to the boat building community, with the generous support of our funders. Stay tuned for the launch of this new virtual, and hands on opportunity!
